I just say “I’m interviewing and considering (x) role at (x) company” The stakes are much lower and I find people are more open vs. If I have an offer in hand, I don’t usually reveal that either. If I can’t get a call, I ask if they could provide their honest thoughts in an InMail or Email and I mention how “this is a big decision for me” and how I’d appreciate any insights they could share to help me make the right choice. I set a goal for myself to have at least 5 conversations with a mix of current and former employees (anything after that point, you start to hear the same things) This helps avoid the disgruntled bias someone might have if they’re not doing well at the company or were maybe let go. Or a current employee gets promoted from a mid level to sr level. Manager to become a director somewhere else. Example: someone leaves the company as a sr. I also look for progression (as implied success) to ensure quality reviews.
